Easy online exercise became an obsession with me in the last week or so. – It was that or maybe have a heart attack on the couch with my cheese and crackers.
Perhaps for you, it’s cookies… me, I’m a savory gal savoring a bit too much these days. And I admit it… I’ve been dragging my feet on the exercise front on and off for six years now since I booted the conman out.
Online During Lockdown
Now during 2020 and the pandemic and lockdown and other social trauma, I’m not pleased to announce that I have physically become a complete sloth.
This does not feel good. In my case, I became aware that I move approximately 270 steps per day: bed, kitchen, desk chair, kitchen, chair, kitchen, couch, kitchen, bed.
That’s a lotta seat bottom and kitchen.
What Is Recovered for You?
Our Bodies Follow Our Lead
My body has done a great job of packing on pounds during pandemic hibernation. I feel okay at home in the yoga pants and jerseys. But when I need to go out… to get groceries.
Or to go to my sister’s – the only household that connects and visits with mine in covid and only four times in the last nine months – well, that’s when I notice how much jiggle and waddle and lumpy stuff I’m hauling.
As in I don’t quite walk as I normally did… it’s uncomfortable and awkward. – That’s’ just wrong. And I’m self-conscious about how I look and my tummy that rolls over and sticks out when I sit – or stand. Okay, so maybe I’m exaggerating – and maybe not – my sister runs marathons – that’s a lot to hold myself up against.
Too Easy To Do Nothing
One thing I know for sure: if I’m feeling this, tons of us are. If you’re in a time of PTSD due to a hijacking you’ve escaped, then all the more this is a time that our bodies go yo-yo-like in terms of weight, blood pressure, candida, and more.
Now that it’s egg-nog, mashed potatoes and gravy, pecan pie, and turkey leg season, I can clearly see the writing on the wall… I have to move it or truly lose it.
Healthy Heart or Die
For myself, I’m truly concerned – okay scared – that my extreme sedentary life along with a not great diet at this point including what is for me, a near nondrinker, copious amounts of vino – that I might just croak.
My heart – emotionally and physically – is sending me signals that I’m ruining my health. This has motivated me to put down the chips and move. I’m hoping that by confessing all to you that I keep myself inspired and accountable.
The New Normal
In my pre-conman days, I did tons of yoga. At a studio. A studio is not where I’m going this year, and let’s be real – likely not next year either. I also won’t be headed to a gym -never a gym fan anyway. Easy online exercise became my mantra as a workout solution.
As far as easy online exercise I have a pretty tall order.
- Inviting, pleasant with good production value
- Zero preambles from the host; just do it
- Low music mixed well below the presenters audio level
- Non-aggressive moves meaning no boxing or punches
- No jumps or quick-paced turns, no “okay, now faster…“
- Low impact
- I want to sweat
I want to feel it, I love to be physical, feel strong, and use the bod I’ve got. Here are my faves I’ve discovered that are also free or low cost, effective, and encouragingly motivating easy online exercise options.
Easy Online Exercise
Leslie Sansone You Tube
Walking… at home! Right in your living room, on your own patio or in the bedroom, den, family room, heck you can do this in a kitchen! There are a few moves: walking in place, walking up and backwards, front kicks, a leg lift, a side-step, a double side-step, and kick-backs.. and the good old grape vine.
It doesn’t matter which leg you use, right or left, which side you step to first or second… The YouTube versions are older, the class is led by Leslie or is sometimes Leslie solo. There are 15-minutes 20, 30 or as she labels them 1-mile, 2-mile and 3-mile walks. Some include weights or those nifty stretchy bands.
Leslie’s videos are old school, corny, sweet, loving, kind, calm, and dorky. Perfect. As the huge hearted woman she is, Leslie offers her videos free on her Walk At Home by Leslie Sansone YouTube channel. She has a website with membership fees and more workouts, including up to current date workouts led by her lead walkers.
Barre3
Barre3 has many workouts and many teachers. The website is laid out well for easy use. The classes start at the start. First time I’ve seen a presenter not talk about themselves for three minutes. Yipee!!
Barre3 came to me in a Twitter or Instagram promotion. It offers a 14-day free trial and then during that trial the option to take a subscription at $4.99 per month for three months. So worth it. – How to get this for yourself?
Hack number one: do a search in Google, on your phone or laptop for “Barre3”. Within a day or so the offers for reduced and trial access to the online classes will show up in your online feed on social media and everywhere.
That’s just how the algorithms work. Whatever we search is then offered up to us as ads and promotions, you can use this method for anything you’re interested in whether it’s a blender or a car, or a new mattress.
Here’s hack number two: the regular rate is $29.99 per month… but at some time in the first three months of $4.99 per month, log in. Go into your account settings and click “cancel”. Before you can confirm the cancellation they ask if you’d like to continue at $9.99 per month with some limitations.
Personally, those limitations suit me just fine. It’s an offer for access to 10-minute workouts, weights, lower body, core, and the like in small segments with rotating availability of their pick of 30, 35, and 60 monthly offerings. – I’m in love with Barre3
Coach Kel
Coach Kel offers a mix of ballet, yoga, pilates and some hand weights in highly effective short workouts. She’s a single mom of little girls who are sometimes in her videos playing in the dance room while she tapes a class.
Kel has a YouTube channel and like Leslie, also a website with subscription options and more classes to chose from.
The Future Looks Fitter
Pre-pandemic and pre-conman, though I went to yoga classes, it wasn’t daily and it was never in the morning. Exercising in the morning was not in my DNA. Now, however, I’ve come to relate to and understand what my sister always told me: people who keep up with exercise do it in the morning.
What’s goes on for me in 2020 is that by 3:00pm I’m done; just cooked. All I want to do is veg out and eat and sleep; the brain has shut down.
So, now I’ve conceived this great idea… slide outta bed, get water, make coffee, and get online with Leslie. Start out with 15-minute sets. A few days later add a 10-minute Barre3.
Then start doing 15-minute Leslies and a 10-minute Barre3 later on in the day so that I’d move for almost an hour a day compared to not moving at all. Much less back-side and snacking. I’d feel better, sleep better, and be getting strong and accomplishing something. – Good plan.
Here’s to hopin’ I can keep it up… feel free to join me!
